A true Conservative...

Confronted by runaway spending in a budget requiring $53-BILLION worth of reductions to balance, Stockwell Day summoned reporters Monday to announce he would save a maximum of $1.4 MILLION by eliminating 245 appointments.

These are not government jobs with salaries, staffing costs or hefty pension obligations. Mostly part-time seats on obscure boards and tribunals rewarded with honorariums, these usually serve as low-level patronage plums for party faithful. The vast majority of the posts are now vacant, some having languished unfilled for years without anybody noticing enough to complain.

How the government will save big bucks by eliminating positions which do not have an actual paycheque up for fiscal sacrifice is a mystery Mr. Day did not satisfactorily explain.

There was big public support to axe the political party subsidy.

Don't worry James, there is much, much more to come and my guess is that the Liberals will whine, complain then threaten election only to see Iggy and rest of the cowards climb back down that hill yet again.

Its a start James. Get ready for more , the Liberal whine will be in overdrive soon enough.
Ridenrain is right, cutting those party subsidies do have a lot of support.

Only 36% approved the subsidy and it would save almost $30 million. Surely the Liberal party has grown up enough that it can raise it's own money by now.

Are there any cuts that the Conservatives could make that would get Liberal support?

At least they didn't cut transfer payments to shave billions off of that $53 Billion hole. That would have been catastrophic as was proven by the previous gov'ts.

So tell us. Where would you cut?
And remember this,if you can find the cuts you will be attacked for it. Whether it is destroying families, culture, children, police officers etc. the attacks will come.

Martin loved to cut transfer payments to the Provinces.

Affecting health care and education.

What would Liberal reaction be if Harper did this?

Don't forget that the Liberals also raided the pension surpluses of the public sector, armed forces and the RCMP, not to mention the theft of $54 Billion Dollars from EI.

He needs to fly all over the country on a challenger jet to explain it his position in each and every riding! Yeah! And 10 percenters too!

The $30 Billion lawsuit resulting from Paul Martin's debt reduction plan should be hitting us soon... but I guess that will be Harper's fault too.
