There's a reasonable argument that, with the merger of Chapters/Indigo and the failure of other book retailers (in effect leaving Walmart the major book competitor in retail), that the Canadian book industry would do better with competition from the US or elsewhere.
Regardless, I cannot see this government much moved by Canadian content concerns -- this story may represent a trial balloon. If no one raises a stink other content restrictions may fall.

The federal government is allowing online book seller Amazon.com to build a warehouse in Canada in return for the U.S. company's promise to promote Canadian culture and to hire its first-ever Canadian employees.
The government said Monday it approved Amazon.com's plan for a "fulfilment centre" warehouse after reviewing the proposal under the Investment Canada Act. That law protects the bookselling business from foreign ownership because it is part of a cultural industry.

I assumed they where because their is AMAZON CANADA as when they started up the CANADA POST mail trucks featured their logos etc when S COPPS was still in charge of HERITAGE and me things WALLMART does bad service as they only carry the top 10 of anything and if you wanting outside this like a WINGS cd you have look elsewhere.
and don't have the same prices as CANADA and thus I use the original most of the time.
