Guergis questions expected to dominate Commons

This is a major scandal but if the police are involved (and it appears they are) it will be impossible for disclosure to be made. Some might suggest that is precisely why the police were brought in -- my sense is that Harper did it because he saw there was a real danger of things looking like a cover-up and so he went to the Mounties.

Parliament Hill is expected to be abuzz Monday with questions over why member of Parliament Helena Guergis is under investigation.

The MP for the Ontario riding of Simcoe-Grey was kicked out of cabinet and expelled from her party on Friday. Prime Minister Stephen Harper called in both the RCMP and the ethics commissioner to investigate unspecified allegations against Guergis.

The House of Commons website now lists her as an Independent MP.

Opposition parties have demanded the government come clean on the accusations being made against Guergis.

NDP Leader Jack Layton said it's in everyone's interest to make the accusations public.

"What we're going to have is the House of Commons asking questions about this sordid affair instead of spending our time dealing with the important issues, so get it off the table," he said.

"Come clean," he urged the government.
