The scandal itself is fairly minor -- I doubt very much it reaches beyond Guergis and Jaffer. But the tone is all wrong for the Conservatives. It gives a sense of disconnection from the base:

OTTAWA–Stephen Harper knows well the damage a scandal can do to a political party – one could argue he's in power because of it.
Having seen the Liberals dragged down by their sponsorship scandal, the Prime Minister understands how the toxic brew of a political furor and a disenchanted electorate can chase a party from power.

As much as I hate and fear Brother Steve, this probably isn't as serious as say, what is being alleged about the Quebec liberals these days.
As you point out, this probably doesn't even go beyond the happy disfunctional couple themselves and their little circle. I don't think any ministries are involved or any other MPs for that matter.
However, I'm seeing pattern with STeve, as that Campion-Smith column points out, Steve is in power largely in part due to ADSCAM. I would even say that, had it not been for ADSCAM or rather, the media circus surrounding it, I don't think Brother Steve would even be in power today, even with the right merged.
I guess this is why Steve is handling this scandal so badly. However, I do think this is a welcome distraction from him. Do we hear anyone talking torturegate anymore? There, I believe, lies the most damning info.
Another thing to think about here. A 2-bit indebted sleazey PI has more credibility than Richard Colvin?
When the Liberals were in office we saw massive cutting of transfers to the provinces for Health, Education and Social Services, the raiding of the pensions of the Public Service, the RCMP and the Military, the illegal appropriation of some $54 Billion Dollars paid by workers and their employers into EI, myriad scandals involving graft and corruption by the Liberal Party, the most notable being ADSCAM, and one of the most infamous quotes coming from Justice Gomery saying of the Liberal Party, 'they are criminally organized”.
The Liberal Party is toast, there is no way back.
And now they suggest a national carbon tax?
And when will they pay back that missing $40 Million from ADSCAM?
What about the $162 Million Taxpayer Dollars Paul Martin's CSL received while he was Finance Minister?
This Jaffere Guergis thing is about two individuals who have questionable judgment, it is not going to be a factor no matter what those in the Liberal Party wish for or how their MSM friends attempt to spin it.
Liberals live in a land of lollipops, fairy tales and unicorns.
Anon 10:55...your comments are true but no matter which government is in power, these kinds of scandels and corruption exist. It is up to us no matter what party we choose to belong, to keep diligent watch...because, because, because it happens to be the beast in the political arena. Why that is so goes beyond comprehension since it is our country we ought to be concerned with. Power corrupts men.
