The aphorism above pretty much sums up my theological worldview. Man invented God, but doing so allowed for man to make progress beyond the stone age. Without the infrastructure that early organized religion had built, there would be no first step in acquiring knowledge and eventually the will-to-power to attain reason, which ultimately deconstructed the existence of God, or at least humanity's previous interpretation of said God(s).
As horrific as the Old Testament seems to our modern sensibilities, it's laws and proscriptions are far more sane and rational than a society with no laws and where "might makes right".
Belief in God is the foundation of all social organization that we see today.
