All the barricades; Toronto June 2010

Walking through downtown today ... .

Trees are down, fences are up, businesses have signs saying they're closing.

At the Courthouse a worker is pulling up landscaping.

Bike stands are being hauled away.
Barricades are being stacked up outside my Club.

Maybe it's necessary.

But it's very sad.

BS -- Toronto desrves to be torched

MississaugaPeter said...

It is bizarre because in 1988, when Toronto hosted the G7 conference - with Reagan, Thatcher, Mulroney, Kohl, de Mita, Takeshita, and Delors - none of this ridiculous stuff was happening. I remember walking late at night from hotel to hotel (I had just moved here from Alberta) where the leaders were staying and not being stopped once nor did I see any security.

Either things have really, really changed, or ...

I am sure some people are making a lot of money on this.

I have read accounts by Tories in effect blaming Toronto for the massive security bill - it has subways, fronts on a lake, airspace threats, multicultural (i.e. Muslim) population, on and on. If Toronto is such a security nightmare why did Our Furious Leader choose it in the first place? It seems our Exalted Genius opted for the worst possible place. Go figure.

Toronto is a horrible choice for this summit. The amount of distruption is ridiculous.
