In the 1930's advertisements explaining how "naturally skinny" people could easily put on weight were common. Here, a "Kelp-O-Malt: Skinny Girls" ad from November 1934 promises to allow people to put on weight fast! Similar ads were directed at men.
I suppose the common feature between now and then is an obsession with weight?

Common yes. But we've gone from one extreme to the other. Thin is in. But the women are too thin now. Almost skeletal looking.
Take a look at how thin that girl on the left is. And now remember that in the 30's refrigeration wasn't common, there was a depression, fresh fruit and vegetables were available in season only. Meat was expensive and could either be produced locally or had to be preserved. Appetizing abundant food is a relatively recent phenomenon and being overweight then was a sign of wealth.
