"The HST is a significantly more efficient sales tax system that will improve the investment climates in both provinces and ultimately benefit Canadians through more opportunities, higher rates of economic growth and increased prosperity. The three remaining non-harmonized provinces, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Prince Edward Island, should follow suit."

What I cannot wrap my head around, and am waiting for clarification from my Liberal MPP, is that on July 1st I will be paying %13 on some things, %5 on others and %8 on things like home insurance.
I was under the impression this was to be a HARMONIZED entity, ie %13 or 0, tax, yet it appears that the governments have hoisted this third level of taxation on the consumer, while hiding the PST and GST under the HST banner.
Mr. Morton, I challenge you to shop for a variety of items on June 30th, 2010 and record the prices. On June 30th, 2011 do the same with for those items, and let's compare where the savings actually went. I highly doubt the consumer is going to come out ahead, and I would like to hope that I am wrong.
Regards.
