I agree that after an election discussions of a coalition are sensible and perhaps a coalition with the NDP could work (but one could imagine an ad hoc coalition with any Party -- in effect that's how all minority governments work).
A coalition before an election just doesn't make sense.

He is probably right.
But this isn't 1917. Past glories are just that.
This is now a party that just last year tried to form a government with the support of sepratists after its worst showing in an election in maybe 100 years. It was wrong.
It should have been apparent to anyone who understands this country that it would not succeed. They didn't care. There was no regard for their history during all this.
In all of this talk there is another clear storyline. The current leader does not want a coalition and the official party line is that there should not be one. All of this talk undermines his authority. There is now clear recognition within the Lib party that they cannot win the next election or more to the point have no chance of a majority.
Iggy is in a position where he cannot comment on the coalition talk while everyone else around him (except Paul Martin) chirps about it.
The party "insiders" have had enough and they want Iggy out. This talk is pushing him.
