Two families of bears in Svalbard

The shot is from a distance but is worth a look -- both families were attracted by a whale.

In discussions with John Stoneman, a noted Canadian naturalist, I was told that polar bears are not solitary animals if there is sufficient food. Generally there are severe limits on food in the wild and so the bears stay far from each other except on rare occasions -- but where food is plentiful (say as in Churchill) bears are happy to stay in groups.
