That said, the more I deal with First Nations, especially those from the far north who have never lived in centres of more than 500 people, the more I realize prison is specially hard for First Nations.
Gladue is rightly decided -- sentencing aboriginal people from isolated hamlets to lengthy terms must be done only when absolutely necessary and with great caution.

What kinds of crime in Canada garner "lengthy sentences" today? You make it sound like some guy from a Northern reserve commits some minor crime and gets slammed with 10 years in the pokey. It seems to me that you have to try real hard in Canada to get a lengthy sentence and at that point deterrence and separation are the two more important factors. In fact, the types of serious crime I think we are talking about are likely to be amplified in a small town where the victim (remember the victim???) may have to deal with this person daily. We are concentrating so much on race, and making a criminal the "victim" because of race, that the courts are forgetting the people who are actually hurt by crime.
I have always wondered about prisons. What is the logic of taking criminals and putting them into the company of *each other*?
I know you can't put people into solitary confinement, but wouldn't it make more sense to regulate a prisoner's contact with other people, so that they are exposed only to good role models, instead of incessantly to bad role models?
Well, agg assault gets 8 - 10 yrs regularly -- thats pretty long. The trouble, in large part, is that sentences dont seem very consistent

with 2 for one sentencing, or three for one sentencing one usually serves less than 3 years. This is not fair to the victims.
I don't care if you are aboriginal, black, white, muslin or christian
all punishment should fit the crime and the sentence should be served in full and not one day less.
P.S. inmates should also lose their right to vote until they are released. They should also be barred from TV and internet.
