The head of Statistics Canada has resigned after a controversial decision by the Conservatives to scrap the long-form census, saying a voluntary survey cannot become a substitute for a mandatory one.
"Under the circumstances, I have tendered my resignation to the Prime Minister," Munir A. Sheikh said in a statement posted to the Statistics Canada website Wednesday evening.
…
In his own statement, Sheikh said he could not comment on what he told Clement.
"I cannot reveal and comment on this advice because this information is protected under the law. However, the government can make this information public if it so wishes," he said.
"I have always honoured my oath and responsibilities as a public servant as well as those specific to the Statistics Act."

Ignatieff should already have said he would rehire him and reinstate the census if elected.
Instead, he says "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance." Well, yeah, but... hackneyed? And a little off topic? And irrelevant? And - worst - vague.
Also, the rest of his reaction is equivocated. He says the government is flying blind. He says people are opposed to the move.
What he doesn't say is what he believes (that the census should be reinstated, presumably) and what he would do.

The census crisis is not new. It is days old. He should have a response, a good reaction, and the capacity to build on that as events, such as today's, unfold. But he has none of this.
If Ignatieff can't speak directly with Canadians, he'll never be elected. If he doesn't state clearly what he believes and what he would do differently, people will continue to believe (as I do) that he pretty much supports Harper and would govern in much the same fashion.
Iggy said that before the resignation.
He said he would rehire him before the resignation?

I'd be glad of that reference oo
