Jeffrey Simpson <http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/jeffrey-simpson/> | What the gun registry vote mostly does, therefore, is strengthen the Conservatives where they are already overwhelmingly strong, and possibly give them a good issue in some NDP and Liberal-held ridings in rural or semi-rural areas. But for every one of those opposition-held ridings where keeping the registry might serve the Conservatives well, there are just as many where their stand is a political liability.

Since getting rid of the registry was part of the Tory platform during ther last election, I don't accept that people who knew that and still voted for them will now switch their vote because of the gun registry fiasco. It seems evident that the members who switched their stance are more in jeapordy than those who stayed true to their stated intentions.
In other words, Conservative seats should not be in danger because of the LGR while some other party's seats may be.
A person who voted for a NDP candidate already knew that the party supports the gun registry. Same with the Liberals. A handful may switch but the vast majority won't. This is only an issue with people who are getting 150K a year, and not with folks struggling to pay their bills or looking for work. Speaking of elites ...
I didn't hear a bang. I heard the thud of a lasso as it hit the fence pole while Dusty Harper practiced his roping tricks.
The registry vote was a weak throw by Dusty to prove that there really is a Coalition that really will work together to do things that a majority of 33% of Canadians really do not want because Canadians really don't like going to jail.
Really.
Economic growth is being marked down by the Bank of Canada.
Yeah, Harpo you campaign long and hard on killing the LGR while the performance of the economy will be killing your re-election.
Tom, the Conservatives did have it in their platform but they did not actively campaign on it. For those not paying attention, which includes the majority of the electorate, that promise in the platform went unnoticed. Really, it was just put there because to do otherwise would have pissed off alot of Conservatives.
To believe that the gun registry debate and vote will not have an impact on all of the parties in Parliament is wishful thinking in the extreme.
It has not made life any easier for rural Liberals and Dippers but the same can be said for Conservatives in ridings and demographic groups that generally support the registry.
Mr. Simpson's analysis is a reasonable assessment of the situation the federal parties find themselves in.
I voted NDP for 45 years. Campaigned hard for them, ran provincially in NB. Drove icy roads in the winter, worked my butt off for them. Ever try convincing a Maritimer that the NDP was different? I did and I was wrong. Sorry Canada, sad to say a vote for the NDP is a wasted vote. Mine will go to the Conservatives in the next election. When the NDP elects a new leader I will reconsider giving them my vote. Will not vote for liberals or for the coalition. This country needs the left wing option. Do it my way Ignatieff is slightly to the right of Attila the Hun. Harper and most Canadian Conservatives are to the left of the American Democrats.
Tom nailed it. Scrapping of the registry is a common approach to the CPC to not punish the law abiding citizens with taxes.
They trust Canadians with Liberty. They punish law breakers and not lord over the citizens.
Liberals have lost sight of Liberty and smaller government.
Twenty MPs actively spoke in favour of scrapping the LGR and voted 2x in parliament.
Liberals and Democrats need the Bloc to kill the Bill.
Two leaders in Toronto whippped or persuaded their MPs to change their vote.
MPs will be held accountable for their betrayal of trust. Your own words to scrap the registry will be no used to prove you are hypocritical or a pawn for the Toronto leader.
"Since getting rid of the registry was part of the Tory platform during ther last election, I don't accept that people who knew that and still voted for them will now switch their vote because of the gun registry fiasco."
There has been a significant change since the last election campaign, and that is the RCMP report. It is no longer a "boondoggle"; it is now an effective, cost efficient tool for the police. THAT may sway people in certain ridings.
"The LGR is effective and useful and not a boondoggle"
Thank you Gayle the non Liberal supporter...
This is priceless.
Oh CS. Whether or not you believe the registry is a boondoggle, the fact you are ignoring is that the RCMP report says it is a useful and cost effective tool.
Let me break this down for you. On one side you have the conservatives whining about boondoggles, and on the other hand you have the non-partisan police chiefs, supported by an objective and independently audited RCMP report saying it is cost effective and useful.
What this means is that, while before the CPC ran basically unopposed on the whole "boondoggle" meme, now they are faced with independent, non-partisan opposition. This could change the minds of some people who voted for the CPC before, believing the whole "boondoggle" scenario. Now that there is independent evidence to the contrary, people who are concerned about public safety might just change their vote.
So you can pretend this is all about me being a liberal partisan if you want, but I think that is just cover for your inability/unwillingness to accept you are simply wrong.
Have a nice day now.
Gayle feel free to make up any talking point you like on behalf of the pro-registry debate.
It won't save the all the flip flopped MPs.
In fact Lib-NDP admitted LGR is flawed and needs to be fixed. I look forward to the coalition with using their opposition days working together to fix the registry and presenting the alternative in Parliament.
Again kudos for using women groups, Police Chiefs as props. It went over really well in those ridings.
I take it by the way you have avoiding the actual point I was making that you are conceding it.
Gayle you are fee to spot as many unicorns as necessary.
Things are going great Hope and Change dearie!
So conceding then.
Thanks
Assolutamente d'accordo con lei. Penso che questo sia una buona idea.
