George Smitherman's Statement to the Jewish Community

As we approach the end of this mayoral campaign, I want to reaffirm my support for Toronto’s Jewish community, a model community that promotes diversity, tolerance, inclusion and the values of ‘tikun olam’, making the world a better place.

In particular:

· I believe in the right of an independent Israel as the state for the Jewish people to live in peace and security with its Arab neighbours.

· I will continue to oppose, in the strongest terms possible, the boycott and demonization of Israel and the divisive and hateful message that it continues to propagate in our city and beyond.

· I believe Toronto’s Jewish community stands as a shining example of the wisdom of Toronto’s motto “Diversity our Strength”. If elected Mayor, I will continue to work closely with the community’s institutions and individuals that contribute so much to our great city.

For all these reasons and for the positive vision that I have for Toronto, I hope that I can count on your vote on October 25th.
