Khadr negotiating plea deal

Neither side really wants to see this go to a judgment:

A plea deal in the Omar Khadr case is being negotiated, just days before his war crimes trial is set to resume Guantanamo Bay.

Canadian lawyer Nathan Whitling confirmed that a “potential deal” is in the works but that he could not comment on details.

Quoting unnamed sources, Al Arabiya television station reported that a settlement had already been reached, including a provision that would allow the Toronto-born captive to spend the majority of his sentence in Canada.

They can negotiate all they want but they don't have the power to negotiate on behalf of the government of Canada. It will be up to the government to decide if he serves his time in Canada. Me, I'm ambivalent to that as Khadr will return to Canada either way after he serves his well-deserved time.

If this turns out to be true I would be curious to see if Canada can continue to hold Khadr in prison once hes back in Canadian custody. There are already several court decisions declaring that Khadr's rights have been violated by Canadian officials and there is really no doubt that his rights were violated by the Americans while he was in custody at Guantanamo. The sticking point in getting a remedy for Khadr is that he is not in Canadian custody. Once he is in Canadian custody it'll be interesting to see what the courts order--deal or no deal.

KC,

My guess is he gets released shortly after coming to Canada.
