Less than 1 in 6 Toronto traffic lights are synchronised

Today's Star reports, in passing, that less than 1 in 6 Toronto traffic lights are synchronised.

That's astonishing.

Synchronised traffic lights speed the flow of traffic, cut idling emissions and make for a far more pleasant commute. Buses, cars and trucks move faster - so people move faster.

There are difficulties -- synchronised lights often speed traffic one way and slow it another -- but the GTA has smart mathematicians who can work out the algorithms.

Does anyone know what the statistics are for synchronised lights in the GTA generally?
