From where I am now, it's not easy to get the results of the Ontario elections.
It is clear, however, that many of the campaigns I supported failed -- indeed, even my second choices lost!
And it is easy to say "the sky is falling".
But it's not.
The voters have made their preferences clear and elected people with platforms that are direct and articulated. My view that those platforms are impractical and regressive is obviously not accepted widely. I hope I am wrong and the majority are right.
Regardless, at most the elections signal a fairly small shift in the electorate's views (notice how careful the winners were not to raise radical issues -- they focused on taxes and not, for example, burkhas). And one member of a municipal council is but one member of council.
What I mean is this -- if there is a specific project (say bringing wheelchair accessibility to a specific public transit stop) let's focus on that. Forget big picture issues for the moment (and those are often merely mirages anyway) and work on the practical.
Perhaps it's being in Cape Dorset but small steps look achievable -- giant leaps do not.

Perhaps there is a lesson for you in that observation, Mr. M.
well, James seems to me Rob Ford won because:
- he was passionate
- he was focused in his message and stayed on track
- he clearly wanted to help the tax payer (and who isn't considering that in these challenging economic times)
-he wanted to stop the self serving gravy train
- he seemed honest in his intentions
- and my favourite - he *did not* speak out of both sides of his mouth! All the above & more got him elected.
- Smitherman wasn't my second, third or thirty third choice. And while I could cite many reasons as to why - it really stood out to me through Smitherman's post loss speech last night. It was all about - him - me - my - MY election to loose (please) while Ford's - was all about - US!
so there you have it. Maybe it's good you and Flocke are in Cape Dorset :)
Daria
ps and as Rocco said - vote for ethics and integrity -and I did :)
Could you please tell me why you removed my comment, James?
I haven't removed any posts -- so Paul, if you like repost your post -- I assume there was a technical glitch. Daria, I respect what you say. I hope Ford does well because Toronto needs that. Finally, as I learnt the hard way -- big leaps in Cape Dorset lead to falling flat on your behind ... small steps are prudent!!!
