In R. v Wright, Justice Speyer October 25, 2010 (thanks to Selwyn Pieters who argued the case and brought the case to my attention) the Court struck a guilty plea, even where a careful plea inquiry had been held by the Court, largely on the basis there were no written instructions by the accused to counsel. While other factors existed in Wright (a hesitation on plea and a "last minute" situation) the decision emphasises the importance of having written direction to take a plea.
