A major explosion ripped apart the exclusive Platinum Lounge of a Mexican beach resort popular with Canadians during the breakfast hour on Sunday morning, killing at least six people, including as many as four Canadians. The local authorities immediately said it was an accidental blast. Maybe. It does seem that a lot of Canadians get injured or killed in Mexico. Maybe it makes sense to stay closer to home?

We were considering a trip there early in December. We had the same thought as you this morning. Dominican Republic is too close to cholera-plagued Haiti; Cuba is, well Cuba and I've heard of bed bugs infestation. Everywhere else seems too expensive. And my husband doesn't trust anything the Mexican authorities say. So we decided this morning that it'll be Whitby Ontario. We may be moving there next year due to my husband's new job in the eastern GTA. We should get to know the area better before we purchase a home there.
Whitby doesn't sound as romantic as the Caribbean sea but the company will be great.
to Lorraine -
Cuba is gorgeous! And you'll have a chance to converse - if you speak Spanish or French with courteous friendly often university educated staff!
And at Canadian prices, some great deals. Suggestions for you too James :)

I wouldn't base my assessment on the level of danger on the frequency of stories in the newspaper.
In 2009, for example, Florida had 1,017 murders, 5,501 rapes, and 30,911 robberies. Jamaica say 1600 people murdered in 2008. I'll take Mexico, thanks.
