Yonge Street north of Finch is a perpetual traffic jam. Buses, two a minute (!), travel north to Thornhill and beyond. The buses are slow and jammed. Cars move barely at all.
A fixed link transit system freeing up Yonge Street and connecting the TTC subway to the northern GTA (Thornhill, Richmond Hill and Aurora) is essential. A subway would be ideal but may be too costly -- LRT is a legitimate compromise.

Light Rapid Transit for the GTA
Today's Star rightly complains the St Clair LRT system was implemented badly. But that doesn't mean LRT is a bad idea in general.
