Statement by Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff on Durban III

OTTAWA - Michael Ignatieff made the following statement on Canada's decision to not participate in 10th anniversary of the Durban conference on racism:

"I unequivocally support the decision to boycott the Durban III conference, taking place in New York next September.

"The first Durban conference, which the proposed Durban III conference seeks to commemorate, turned into a festival of racism against Israel and the Jewish people that Canada was right to condemn. Sadly, while a decade has passed, the Durban conferences remain a staging ground for anti-Semitic and anti-Israel statements.  Canada should absolutely not participate in the Durban III conference or countenance in any way these hateful views.

"In light of this disturbing trend, the conferences cannot be seen as legitimate forums capable of facilitating honest discussions about racism.

"Combating both racism and anti-Semitism is a global responsibility, and as steadfast defender of the principles of equality and dignity for all persons, Canada must not participate in Durban III."

That's the kind of strong statement, and forceful leadership that wins you elections. Thank you, MI!

Ignatieff, like Harper, has demonstrated for many years that he will support Israel regardless of the country's expansionist militaristic agenda that defies international law and the will of 90% of the world. Ignatieff, also like Harper, believes that criticizing Israel in any way is the same as anti-semitism. Their motivations are different of course. Harper is blindly pro-Israel because he adheres to a form of religious extremism called dispensationalism. Ignatieff's ruthless pro-Israeli position and failure to recognize the real plight of the Palestinian people and the role that their hopelessness plays in international conflict, on the other hand, is motivated by a blindly pro-Western right-wing ideology.

Ignatieff will never win an election because he is so close to the Conservative party that he will never sway enough people with his "Conservative Lite" positions. And if by some chance he survives until Harper resigns from the House permanently and wins an election based upon the power vacuum that will obviously exist after Harper's departure, then time has demonstrated that he will be so close to Harper that it will make little difference.

Enjoy

Nice to see Iggy support Harper... again.

I don't agree on this point but I do agree that the Liberals have to be different from the CPC to be elected and they aren't.

Is the Liberal Party making the same mistake as the Democratic Party down South? That is, moving closer to a center that keeps moving right?

So now its "Canada's" decision and not Harper's.

Ignatieff's greatest fault is that he doesn't have a left / right compass to guide his direction. The path to the centre is not found via swinging madly from far left to far right. He not only confuses the electorate in respect to his political leanings, he acts in a manner which indicates that he is drowning in confusion as well.
