Don't ask don't tell -- will the change help Obama

A symbolic victory -- in fairness real enough for gays in the US military -- but will it re-energize Obama's base?

The story below, by the way, is wrong. The "don't ask don't tell" policy allowed gays to serve -- before they were completely banned. "Don't ask don't tell" was a compromise.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate gave final approval Saturday to historic legislation repealing the 17-year-old policy banning gays from serving openly in the military, handing President Barack Obama a victory on one of his administration's biggest social-policy priorities.

In a 65-31 vote, the Senate gave Mr. Obama the authority to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy, which forced gay and lesbian soldiers to hide their sexual orientation or be expelled from the armed forces.

The story isn't incorrect, gays were banned from serving openly. Now gays can serve in the military and be open about it - or rather they will be able to very soon.
