OTTAWA — The Harper government's controversial legislation to combat human smuggling is all but dead.

Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff has announced that his party won't support the bill at second reading, meaning they'll try to kill it before it can even be studied by a Commons committee.

The next time a boat approaches Canada's shores, with people looking to start a new life, they should direct it here to Moncton, where we'd love to have the immigration, and (I would like to think) would welcome them with open arms.

Legislation that panders - however coded - to prejudices and some sort of idea of what Canada's 'founding cultures' should look like, should be opposed, and most vigorously. We are all lucky to live in this country, and if we cannot extend aid to those most in need of a safe haven, then we are in no way deserving of it.

Do you think Liberals would show up if the CPC made it a confidence matter?
