"Step onto one of our traditional dog sleds behind your team of energetic and loveable Alaskan Racing Huskies"

So says the website for Outdoor Adventures at Whistler. Perhaps they might consider taking that comment down for a little while?

The SPCA and the RCMP have launched an investigation following a report that a dogsled handler in Whistler, B.C., undertook the killing of 100 dogs when bookings slumped after the Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Reports surfaced Monday that an unidentified man involved in the dogsledding operation was granted workers' compensation after developing post-traumatic stress disorder for allegedly being forced to kill the dogs.

Outdoor Adventures at Whistler says in a release that for four years they've had a financial interest in Howling Dogs Whistler Inc., which has "operational control of the dogsledding operations." Outdoor Adventures is owned by 29-year-old Joey Houssian, son of Intrawest founder Joe Houssian.

Both the RCMP and the BC SPCA are investigating reports that the dogs were killed execution-style and dumped in a mass grave. Warrants have been filed to access records from Workers Compensation Board.

Staff Sgt. Steve LeClair confirmed Whistler Pemberton RCMP were notified of the SPCA investigation Monday and have assigned an investigator to aid the SPCA.

A statement from Outdoor Adventures states: "OAW was aware of the relocation and euthanization of dogs at Howling Dogs in April 2010, but it was our expectation that is was done in a proper, legal and humane manner." The release goes on to say the company only heard about the unidentified man's compensation last week.

"Shocking doesn't begin to describe what happened to these poor dogs," said an emotional Marcie Moriarty, BC SPCA's manager of animal-cruelty investigations.

"Up to 100 dogs — I don't want to use the term euthanize because they were executed. (The man) describes it as execution-style killings."

Typical of Marxist thinking Morton cares more about dogs than people. Real Canadians hate Whistler anyway. Morton always lived off taxpayer money and doesn't know what it's like to have a real job.

Anon, you seem to have some serious issues and you should look into therapy. Your comments are simply off the wall. This is a terrible story about killing dogs for no reason. It is as offensive as possible and the company should be punished if it's true. It's owners should be punished. Marx has nothing to do with it.

It is a monstrous deed but I do agree that we seem to have more sympathy for animals than people sometimes.

Follow the money.
Outdoor Adventures is owned by 29-year-old Joey Houssian, son of Intrawest founder Joe Houssian.
Now Intrawest announced that it’s moving it’s corporate HQ to Colorado at the end of the year.

Something tells me that Colorado might not be far enough away to distance themselves from this one.

We care more for animals because animals don't make bad choices and then refuse to take personal responsibility. I hardly think that's a marxist attitude.

These dogs did their jobs and were "rewarded" with not only death, but a most inhumane death. The asshat who did the killings was incredibly incompetent. He used a shotgun at some distance, something not especially suited to shotguns as seen by at least one dog described where he shot it and blew half it's face off leaving it with one eye hanging but not damaging the brain. And then there is the dog thrown into the mass grave that was able to crawl out. If you don't find all this disturbing then I'm not sure if you are human, let alone humane.

I wonder if Anonymous IP would trace back to some Conservative MP office. That level of stupidity surely has a home with the Harperites.

I would declare one lash for every dog for each person involved and I'll volunteer here and now to wield the whip.

Heartbreaking and sickening.

My ex works in Whistler and he's familiar with this company -- the dogs are well socialized and could have been sent to malamute rescue for fostering and finding good homes. That's where I got mine from.

I can't even begin to address how savagely they were slaughtered. I'm just sick about this, physically sick.

The Rat said...

I have to comment on the idea of "sending to rescue". Think about that for a minute, the company buys/breeds a crap-load of dogs to take advantage of the Olympic bubble, a few weeks at best. These guys know that dogs live a lot more than a few weeks so how is it the BC SPCA or various rescues who are responsible for these dogs after their profitability is gone? I strongly believe in the concept of personal responsibility and I find it despicable that people in business would use a charity to avoid easily foreseeable business costs.

The Rat - I'm not saying that this company's "business plan" of getting these dogs & dumping them was okay. It was disgusting and despicable.

I'm just saying that since they opted to be irresponsible a-holes, the best option for the dogs would have been rescue. Not killing them. Every year, hundreds of huskies and mals go to loving homes from rescue. These little guys could have had a good life :*(

@ Dana leave it to a socialist to politicize this story... note Dana the Houssian's are heavily invested in the energy sector.. particularly wind energy a very socialist ideology driven industry.

There were a number of ways Joey Houssian could have reduced his liabilities, one of them could have been paying to have the dogs humanely euthanized if 100 homes could not be found for them. But Mr. Houssian, who's chosen to distance himself from the executions by scapegoating his so called MIA no longer employed General Manager, chose the cruel and unethical cost effective route. To add insult to injury the Canadian Public is now responsible for the livelihood of one of the trigger men because he can't cope with his Nazi behaviour; another socialistic, I can't think or do anything for myself ideology.

Would Mr. Morton elucidate for us US residents what the legal consequences may be for the worker who executed the dogs and/or for the Houssians? Here in the States where laissez-faire capitalism rules the day and robber barons run free, there is little or no punishment for even this level of animal abuse. I would hope Canada was a little more "evolved" in its laws. Just curious as I've seen reports on other extreme abuse cases but little media follow-up covering the consequences. Thank you.

@ our friendly US neighbour

As in the US very little if anything will be done regarding the execution of these animals. In Canada instead of the "laissez-faire capitalism rules the day and robber barons run free" attitude the Socialist "it's not what you know it's who you know, the who's greasing who's palms, the who's going to get set up in a cushy job when they're finished public service philosophy will prevail. Same destination; different route but it always comes down to money and lifestyle guarantee.
