Core Canadian values

In today's Star Rick Salutin, writing from India, suggests there are no core Canadian values. Writing from Baker Lake, Nunavut I disagree.

Certainly Canada is not today defined cultural or ethnic norms. But that does not mean we have no core values.

Recognition of the intrinsic value of people, the equality of different ethnic groups and genders, an acknowledgment that everyone is entitled to respect and dignity -- these are some of Canada's core values.

Canada is not defined by where we came from but rather how we treat each other.

Respect for each other defines Canada.
Perhaps we do not have a unifying national dance and we differ as to where we pray or what we eat, but that does not mean we have no unifying intellectual base.

Canada has a reputation for tolerance, but we ought not to be smug and take it for granted. It is important that immigrants fully integrate by the next generation. Government policies out to reflect this, or we may end up like another country that was noted for tolerance, The Netherlands.

I think Canadians are beginning to see this, as evidenced in the last Ontario provincial election- a rejection of independent school funding.
