Jens took this picture shortly before Knut died. He looks happy and comfortable. I watched, with some horror, a video of Knut dying -- it was clearly sudden -- but very sad.
Knut's history was a sad one in many ways; abandoned at birth, raised devotedly by a human caretaker, left more or less alone when he became too big for close human contact, and now this. I can only hope he didn't suffer at the end.
Indeed, I do wonder how the stress of being left with three older rough bears affected him. Still he looked happy enough -- and the end (I could not help but watch the horrifying final video) seemed brief. Based on what I saw I'd speculate an heart attack or stroke.

Kunt had captured the hearts of many. So sad.
I am so crushed at his death. I wept.
So, so sad; rest in peace little Knut.

looked like the whole right side of his body was in spasms. Might have been epilepsy.
