Tories misinformed Parliament on G8 fund: AG

This story is troubling but I'd like to see the report (and not a mere hearsay account of it) before making up my mind!

OTTAWA — The auditor general says the Harper government misinformed Parliament to win approval for a $50-million G8 fund that lavished money on dubious projects in a Conservative riding.

And she suggests the process may have been illegal.

The findings are contained in a confidential report Sheila Fraser was to have tabled in Parliament on April 5.

The report was put on ice when the Harper government was defeated and is not due to be released until after the May 2 election.

However, a Jan. 13 draft of the chapter on the G8 legacy infrastructure fund was seen by The Canadian Press.

It reveals that Industry Minister Tony Clement, the mayor of Huntsville, and the general manager of Deerhurst Resort chose the 32 projects that received funding -- with no regard for the needs of the summit or the conditions laid down by the government.

The report analyzed the $1-billion cost of staging last June's G8 summit in Ontario cottage country and a subsequent gathering of G20 leaders in downtown Toronto

How much corruption can this guy be guilty of before it starts to hurt his numbers?

"troubling" ..perhaps.

The problem is that this is like a car theif complaining that his neighbor got a bicycle through a backroom deal.

You cannot forgive adscam and pretend to be concerned about this stuff.

Canadians know that money gets squandered through large gov't. spending. It is frustrating but it is a reality.

I know that many Libs are touting this as a "game changer". They do that because it is all they have left.

I am not minimizing this news and it is as you pointed out still developing but you cannot expect people to believe that the Libs are a better option.

History proves otherwise.

Harper's main claim and desire to govern is to eliminate government waste and corruption.

Harper was elected on the basis he was clean and transparent -- my sense is that Preston Manning and Stockwell Day may well have been (I disliked their policies but that's another issue). You can't say Harper has been transparent. But let's see how the story develops...
