I suppose chain gangs might be more cost effective than what we have now

"Provincial inmates will be forced into work crews if the Progressive Conservatives are elected on Oct. 6, party leader Tim Hudak says."

This idea may 'sing' to those who think jail is too soft -- I suspect very few of those have seen the inside of a Canadian jail.

Jail is no fun. Seriously, visit a prison and decide if it is a 'holiday spot'.

Regardless, there are some programs now for prisoners to do work outside prison now -- usually park maintenance.

Such positions are eagerly sought and are limited because (1) only non-dangerous prisoners who are not escape risks can participate and (2) it is costly to have guards etc available. (I suppose chain gangs might be more cost effective and could be object lessons that crime doesn't pay?)

Another negative is that having prison labour (there is another name for forcing someone to work for free but prison labour will do for now) takes jobs away from non-criminals:

Hudak would put inmates to work picking up garbage, cleaning graffiti

Provincial inmates will be forced into work crews if the Progressive Conservatives are elected on Oct. 6, party leader Tim Hudak says.

Hudak said the work program of up to 40 hours a week will be mandatory.

"It's time for criminals to give back to society," Hudak told a news conference Thursday.

He said the days of provincial inmates watching HD TV and participating in yoga classes are over.

Hudak said they will be required to pick up garbage and trash along roadsides and clean up graffiti, among other things.

I'd like to see Hudak picking up garbage, at least he'd be doing something useful for a change.

What an odd campaign promise. There are so many things that need to be done, and this is what Hudak decides to do? Was there an outcry from the public for prisoners to pick up trash?

Certainly, the status quo is a disaster. There is nothing "progressive" about defending it.

There are more important issues for sure but anyone who has been paying attention knows that some of these issues have been discussed and will continue to be discussed in the future. They include healthcare, jobs, energy costs, high taxation and scandals etc.

The reason these things are issues is because the current gov't has done nothing to address them (or made them worse). With any luck come October these guys will be taken to the woodshed just like their cousins were at the Federal level.
