Canada Day thoughts

Canada is a good place to be.

A client, quite seriously, asked me if I was afraid of what might happen in the Provincial election this fall. I replied that I was confident the Liberals would do well and went on about how the campaign hasn't really begun.

My client responded by saying "perhaps, but if the Liberals lose will you leave the country?"

At first I thought my client was crazy but then I realized that where he came from being a member of an opposition group was physically dangerous.

And then I realized in much of, perhaps most of, the world, being in opposition is not safe.

Canada is different.

While I want a Provincial Liberal government I am totally confident that I am safe in remaining an open Liberal under a PC or NDP government. I have no fear that on visiting Ottawa a federal agent will throw me in a dungeon because I am a Liberal. Indeed, I know that my Conservative MP would politely meet me and discuss any concerns I have -- as would any NDP or Bloc MP -- regardless of my party affiliation.

Canada is blessed to be a peaceful Kingdom with freedom and ordered liberty. We have much to be grateful for.

Have a wonderful Canada Day.

Do you really believe this:

"I know that my Conservative MP would politely meet me and discuss any concerns I have -- as would any NDP or Bloc MP -- regardless of my party affiliation."

I certainly don't believe it of the Federal Conservatives after the contrived, exclusive way Harper ran his election campaign: requiring pre-registration of CONSERVATIVE SUPPORTERS ONLY ALLOWED at Harper's ralies. Harper evicting students from his rallies because of a photo of "Liberal associations on their facebook page"! Harper evicted many people from his rallies including a Veteran whom wished to ask him a question.--shameful!

This is not the future for Canada that we want to see. For the first time in my life, I am ashamed of Canada with Harper at the Helm!
Hope will be restored when Harper's Government no long reigns and truth, integrity return.
When Harper no longer fires the watchdogs that stand up for the Canadian public's safety. --Not a good track record that is clearly escalating!

62% of Canadians DID NOT VOTE for this Conservative Majority. This government has 2% less of the vote than when they held a minority government all because of our faulty electoral system that does not reflect proportional representation--this needs to change!

The re-branding of the Federal Government of Canada as of this year to now be officially THE HARPER GOVERNMENT --speaks loud and clear as to the direction this government is taking.

The Winnipeg Free Press expressed the truth well yesterday:

Wake up Canada! Before we lose too much!

I have always been proud to be Canadian. Now I look to a brighter day in the future when I can hopefully proclaim that once again!

Wow, paranoia runs supreme. Let's see how long before someone equates Canada under Harper to the dictatorships of the ME, and advocates an uprising...What a bunch of loons.

Canada is a great country, and any envy we had of our southern neighbours has evaporated. I fear a powerful minority is blind to current events and is determined to make us more American. Harper and Hudak can not stand any forum of socialism and drool at the idea of financial constraints that will starve socialism so it can be drowned in the bathtub. I have lived in socialist Austria and dream of a day Canada could be a country as great as that.

"I certainly don't believe it of the Federal Conservatives"...

And yet I don't have to "believe" it of Liberals, I know that non-Liberals could not expect to get help from their MP. Tom Wappel is the poster boy for that.

As for Canada not punishing opposition members, certainly not, politicians don't do that. But punishing supporters, that's totally fair play. Punitive policies and pandering are the stock and trade of Liberal methods, from gun control to ACOA to money for Quebec to the NEP. If you think Canada is a wonderful place you're probably a Toronto Liberal. Otherwise, you know Canada has some pretty serious warts.

Canada is better than Iran or North Korea, but "better" doesn't mean "good enough". The G20 protests showed the whole world that Canadians only have rights as long as the government allows them to have rights, and that's not even going into Ottawa's recent history of police brutality or the Vancouver Police Department's handling of the Pickton Murders or the Conservatives' muzzling of Sisters in Spirits.

Wilfrid Laurier's ideas on Immigrants and being a Canadian in 1907;

‘In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith
becomes a Canadian and assimilates himself to us,
he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else,
for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed,
or birthplace, or origin.

But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet a Canadian, and nothing but a Canadian…

There can be no divided allegiance here.

Any man who says he is a Canadian, but something else also, isn’t a Canadian at all.

We have room for but one flag, the Canadian flag…
And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the Canadian people.’

Wilfrid Laurier 1907

Every Canadian citizen needs to read this!

Oh dear -- my point isn't that Canada is perfect -- no where is. My point is that Canada is pretty darn good and we should take a moment to be proud of that. As for the Conservatives, well, I disagree with them. But that said, I have on many ocassions spoken to CPC MPs who know perfectly well that I am a Liberal and a Liberal Candidate. They haven't always (well, to be honest ever) given me what I asked for but they were polite, listened and gave me a reason why they would not give me what I wanted (a bad reason perhaps but a reason). Let's be clear, all the parties are acting in good faith to make Canada better -- that's the CPC, NDP, Bloc, Green and Liberal. I think the CPC is the wrong way to go but that's another issue altogether. Happy Canada Day!!!
