A wise and noble man

"Genuine kindness occurs when our sole motivation is caring about the welfare of others": Pirke Avos

The funeral of Justice Bentley was deeply moving. The father of Canada's drug treatment courts, Paul Bentley recognized that people can be rehabilitated and that the roots of crime are not always best dealt with by penal treatment. He did not ignore the crime but he never let that crime hide the humanity before him.

Justice Bentley's legacy is far from assured. We must all remember that those convicted of crime are still human and deserving of being treated as created in the image of God.

The current Macleans has an article calling for the reintroduction of flogging as a punishment especially for drug offences. There is a danger of forgetting the humanity of those accused of crime.
