It's like dinner at a restaurant -- I like the eating and don't like the paying ... but I know there "ain't no eatin without no payin".
The key is that, over time, there should not be an inherent deficit. During hard times (as now) a deficit makes sense just so long as in good times the deficit is paid down.
If we don't want services (like health care or roads or air traffic control) then we can cut taxes but services cost money. The illusion we can cut "fat" is merely an illusion. The truth is there really isn't much "fat" in government -- look at Rob Ford's recent realization that he can't square the circle.
