... the anti-police protesters did not appear to participate in the rioting, and quickly denounced it ...

From today's Globe:

"That was the shooting by police last Thursday night of a father of four and alleged cocaine dealer named Mark Duggan. People in the north London community of Tottenham believe Mr. Duggan was shot without provocation while sitting in a car.

There has been a long history of heavy-handed policing, especially toward visible minorities, in Tottenham, and the shooting raised suspicions. A protest in support of Mr. Duggan that began on Friday degenerated into looting and rioting – although the anti-police protesters did not appear to participate in the rioting, and quickly denounced it"

What? No more glib hockey talk? And where did your pal Reid go? I thought this was a serious law blog but clearly I've been wrong. Seems more like a forum for right wing idealogues to spout off all manner of foolishness. Is this a legal blog that takes legal issues seriously or merely a forum to advance your political aspirations?

By the way - painting all young people as hooligans isn't likely to win you the youth vote next time out.

The riots were sparked when police shot a man to death:

"Way to gloss over the facts. The police were trying to arrest him while he was in a cab, he shot at the police, they shot back, now he's dead."

I'll go back to the glib hockey talk -- because it's correct. My point here is that the genuine protesters of police actions were not rioting. The rioters were just using the earlier protests as an excuse.

RE: "I have known crooked lawyers. They exist...."

versus:

"And James Morton, president of the Ontario Bar Association --on whose executive, full disclosure, this writer sits --noted in a Post op-ed that the Maclean's piece was packed with "slurs, half truths and outright false statements," and that the magazine's cover recalled Nazi-era imagery." ( The rats fight back)

"On Monday, James Morton, president of the Ontario Bar Association, used these pages to describe our interview as a "recklessly erroneous" smear on lawyers. He insisted that lawyers are all that stand between civilization and tyranny, and compared us to Nazi propagandists. I don't want to engage in a contest of calumny with a major-leaguer like Mr. Morton, but I would like to challenge his dismissal of Mr. Slayton's characterization of the legal profession as "recklessly erroneous."

There is no evidence the London shooting victim fired at police.
