The message here is really very simple: help the needy.
Similar Bible verses include Deut. 15:7, Deut. 26:12, Lev. 19:19ff, Prov. 31:8ff,
Is. 58:66ff, Jer. 22:3, Luke 12:33 and Luke 3:11.
The ethical directions of the Bible repeatedly focus on the poor, far more than, for example, on sex. The Bible is deeply concerned about poverty and social justice.

It seems even a Communist can quote the Bible.
"The message here is really very simple: help the needy."
Nowhere does the Bible talk about "gioverbnmnet" forcerd charity.
You have it backwards Morton. The bible talks about personall charity, you directly helping the poor yourself.
Jesus wasn't talking about taxing people to give money to your friends.
McGuinty has done nothing fro Welfare or Disability recipients in 8 years.
He don't give a shit about the poor.
He cares about his friends in the banks, the Corporations and the Government unions.
That's all anyone in any level of government all he cares about.
I agree with the comment above. In fact Jesus was a more of a libertarian - trusting in personal acts of kindness vs kindness by proxy aka "forced state welfare"
Jesus's issue with the state were clear and ultimately his tangle with "money changers" was his demise. It seems "social justice" of sorts was handed to him on the cross by the state!
Mind my terrible grammar in the second post.
Wow was that ever terrible but you got my point Morton.
How much do you directly give to charity every year Morton?
You should have no problem telling me that.
20 percent? 30? 5? How much Morton?
Again, in the rush to comment, it appears some have not read what was written but what they thought was written. The post spoke about the Bible being concerned about social justice and giving -- it did not speak of government at all. And at least on my reading, Jesus did have great concern for the needy. Today, in our anonymous society we probably need government to act to ensure the poor are not left without help but I believe in faith based charity and support such with my donations. As for what I donate, that's my business.
"to ensure the poor are not left without help"
We have millions in disability , EI and Welfare that will never get out of poverty.
Social justice is not mentioned in the Bible. Not the Karl Marx version anyway.
Would Jesus approve of Dalton blowing a billion on e-health to unnamed consultants, while not raising disability or welfare in 8 years?
If you want to talk about Jesus, social justice and politics, then you can't ignore the fact that the Liberal in Ontario have kept people poor.
In the last 8 years, give me any example of where social justice actually lifted someone out of poverty, rather than keep them in it.
"Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the Capitalist System was to debauch the currency. By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens."
"Lenin was certainly right," John Maynard Keynes continued in his 1919 classic, "The Economic Consequences of the Peace."
"There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."
