Remembering Randy Echlin

Only today I learned of the death of Justice Randy Echlin, a judge of the Ontario Superior Court.

He had been fighting cancer for nearly two years and when I last saw him he looked fit and strong; he told me he was looking forward to getting back to work.

Justice Echlin was a decent and kind man but that did not mean he was soft. He was a workhorse always delivering out detailed decisions promptly. He knew the law and he applied it. But he tempered his decisions with consideration for the weaknesses of people. He was a judge's judge and will be missed Ontario and Canada have suffered a great loss.

Some additional information:

A service celebrating Justice Echlin's life will be held in Leaside United Church, 822 Millwood Road, Toronto on Saturday, September 10 at 2:00 p.m. No flowers please.

If desired, charitable and fully tax-deductible donations in Randy's memory may be made to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Box 1838, 386 Church Street South, St. Mary's N4X 1C2.

Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

He was a great judge, one of Canada's top minds and leading authorities in the employment law field...and on top of that, his legal writing had style. I never knew him personally, but as an employment lawyer I can say that there are few, if any, whom I respect more than Justice Echlin.

Randy served as my lawyer prior to his appointment to the bench. A smart, funny and thoughtful man, he always conducted himself in a professional and courteous manner. He will be missed.

I'm shocked that I only learned of Randy's passing in the last few days. He was a wonderful guy - warm, funny and very bright. I met him when I was articling at Borden & Elliot (as it then was) and he was in his first year of practice with the firm. Much later, he advised me on a couple of matters and it was always a pleasure to meet with him. This is a sad loss for the profession, the bench and for Canada. My condolences go out to his family and many friends.
