Bruno Balz

A noted German music writer he spent considerable time during the war under arrest or surveillance by the Gestapo; he was homosexual. He was repeatedly tortured in the Gestapo headquarters in Prinz-Albrecht-Straße but was released because his music was seen as helpful to the war effort.

The clip below is "kann denn liebe sünde sein?" ("can love be a sin") -- the subtext was not lost on everyone in wartime Germany -- his songs became anthems for homosexuals imprisoned in concentration camps.
