Conrad Black -- the Voice of Reason on prison reform?

The old, nasty, joke was that a conservative was a liberal who had been mugged. Perhaps a liberal is a conservative who has been arrested?

Conrad learned that you can't hide a file in caviar very well. Other than that I'd take any wisdom he has about being in the joint with a grain of salt.

Conrad Black is probably smart enough to realize that mandatory jail sentences for everybody will just raise the cost of running prisons. Then the Conservatives will have a ready-made argument to privatize them. Then the private prisons will cost even more (since you have to add a profit). The Conservative plan will be much more expensive for Canadian society even before accounting for overfilled underfunded prisons turning into gangster finishing school.

The beginning of the Conservative plan was axing the world-renowned prison farm program. The reason? Magic invisible unicor..err.. too expensive (with zero factual evidence to back up the assertion).
