A chat with a Riding President from Quebec
I had a good chat today with a longtime Liberal and Riding President from Quebec. The President emphasized to me a sense that members felt alienated from the Centre. There is a need to make sure input is given more that just notional attention. I am hoping this President let's me go into more detail about their specific experience -- if so I'll pass it along. For the moment though we need more than just lip service when it comes to member engagement.

One of the many changes in organization we need implemented in the first half of 2012 is the removal of decisions on what party organizational changes and what potential policies are to be adopted, from the party Centre (party brass) and the presentation of alternatives (chosen by members in a OMOV) to members for decisions (again, in a OMOV).
This will stop the lipservice that is currently paid to allowing members to have input in party affairs.
It will empower party members, and increase the vibrancy of the now nearly dead party.
Other substantial changes in party organization are a must, as well, including a re-direction of party funds to the ridings and away from the 'Centre'.

Having party policy created and formally adopted by members is stupid. There needs to be an integrated logic in a party platform, which is impossible to achieve if each policy is adopted by OMOV. And besides, good policy development isn't a hobby, it's done by professionals.
