Justices Karakatsanis and Moldaver to Supreme Court of Canada?

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will name two judges from the Ontario Court of Appeal to Canada's highest court Monday, CTV News has learned.

Sources say that after extensive consultations, Harper has chosen Justice Andromache Karakatsanis and Justice Michael J. Moldaver to fill two vacancies on the Supreme Court of Canada.

Were they on the short list?
Are they considered ideological Conservatives? Good judges?

Based on my reading of this article:
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/pm-taps-ontario-judges-karakatsanis-moldaver-for-supreme-court/article2203240/singlepage/#articlecontent

Justice Moldaver is hard right ideological conservative, with a "tough-on-crime" reputation, while Justice Karakatsanis has close connections to powerful Conservatives – most notably, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty, with whom she worked closely when he was Ontario’s attorney-general.

No surprises here. Looks like your standard Conservative ideological and political appointments.

They were apparently approved unanimously by the committee (from a list, mind), which included Joe Comartin and Irwin Cotler.

I think calling Justice Moldaver a hard right ideological conservative based only on that article is a little much, but he's obviously someone the Conservatives think they'll be very happy with. Justice Karakatsanis, on the other hand, seems like the kind of pick some worried now-Ontario Chief Justice Winkler was; a judge who was chosen because of a backroom wink rather than someone for their legal excellence (though let me be clear that I am in no sense endorsing this view; I haven't reviewed C.J. Winkler's decisions at any sort of length).

I'm surprised that James's post didn't include any thoughts on these questions, though of course he may just be processing...
