This evening I was listening the Messiah and specifically the Hallelujah Chorus.
I was reminded of the tradition of standing during the Hallelujah Chorus.
The custom began during a performance on March 23, 1743. King George II was attending the performance. When the Hallelujah Chorus began King George rose. While there is no certainty as to why he rose, I favor the view he did so to show respect for one greater than him.
This is significant for a very important non religious reason.
AKing recrgnized that he was subject to governance. That is, the State is not all powerful. A very important point indeed.
