Jews were allowed legal status in England as a result of litigation and a judgment.
A Jewish merchant (Antonio Rodrigues Robles) who was already living in London was accused of being Spanish and his goods were confiscated as England was then at war with Spain. He sued for the goods and was awarded judgment against their confiscation and, as a side matter, had his residency regularised.
As a result Jews were allowed to stay and reside in England.

To bad they weren't allowed in Canada in 1939. I have always wondered why Jews are (were?) so enamoured of the Liberal party when it was a Liberal government that turned away the SS ST. Louis. Sure, the Conservatives might have done the same thing, I'm not saying otherwise, but the fact remains that it is a blot in the Liberal party that, to my knowledge, has never received an apology.
