Good for Justice Minister Rob Nicholson

I often slag the Conservatives. But when they do something right they deserve to be recognized:

Government to close legal loophole threatening gay marriage: http://bit.ly/wpm4kv

"The Harper government moved quickly to quell the controversy, promising it had no intention of revisiting the debate on the definition of marriage. Justice Minister Rob Nicholson told reporters last month that he would look at options for clarifying the law, adding it was a "legislative gap" that caused the uproar.

"The confusion and pain resulting from this gap is completely unfair to those who are affected," Mr. Nicholson said at the time. "I want to make it clear that, in the government's view, those marriages are valid.""

Who will pay for the court time? And who will enforce any orders on spousal or child support? While it sounds reasonable to allow foreign gay couples to divorce in Canada if they cannot in their home country I wonder if you can legally restrict this to gay couples? And why should Canadian courts bear the financial burden for the choices of non-Canadian citizens? What will prevent Canada becoming the anti-Las Vegas, the world capital for divorce? I read a couple articles that basically said the reason we don't do foreign divorces if to prevent forum shopping. So how does this change address that?
