Christie Blatchford: Not even Tori Stafford’s mother spared by defence at murder trial

Blatchford seems concerned that the mother was questioned about a drug addiction. And in truth, a gratuitous attack on a victim of crime is wrong (and generally counterproductive).

But here the questioning had a purpose. As Blatchford noted:

"Her boyfriend, James Goris, was using too, she said, and the two of them had actually met Ms. McClintic twice, and been to the shotgun shack where she then lived with her mother, to buy OxyContin."

Mom was buying drugs from someone who has already pleaded guilty of murdering Tori Stafford. That is suggestive, to say the least. I suspect Dirk Derstine, Mr. Rafferty's lawyer, has a pretty good idea where he is going; and it will be an interesting ride:

Don't you think she is just trying to enflame sentiments and influence the jury? She reminds me of that crazy woman on American TV.

Not that I think the trial should not be covered. It is just that she is selective on what she writes and is really over the top. This case is terrible enough without her exploiting it to grow her readership.

I doubt she is trying to influence the jury. Besides, the jury is there and knows what they see. Still, your point is well taken
