Gay bashing in Uganda: Silence is not an option

BERNIE FARBER

As Canadians, we must be careful not to be lulled into complacency. After all, we live in a country that celebrates diversity, pluralism and acceptance. Canada was one of the first nations to legislate recognition of same-sex marriages.

Sadly, many other places in the world are not as tolerant.In October of 2009, Ugandan MP David Bahati submitted a private member’s bill targeting Uganda’s 500,000 gay and lesbian population. Labelled “Kill the Gays” bill, this draconian piece of legislation would have not only criminalized homosexuality but, in certain cases, mandated the death penalty.

Thank you for posting this

The problem is we can't intervene, or help, because the Ugandan government will say, 'See! Homosexuality is a Western import defended by whites!"

And we can't help the gay groups there, like SMUG, because then they will be accused of taking evil white, Western money.

All the while, Uganda gets millions in evil, white Western money, from anti-gay religious groups.

The anti-gay Ugandan government says to Western nations, "Stay out!" And gay groups ask us, "Please stay out." And it feels like all we can do is sit back and watch.

This is shy I so despise the left in this country with their over the top rhetoric on every little perceived injustice.

The wafergate crowd need to be dismissed.

Anonymous, I hope you're not refering to a "Kill the Gays" bill as a "little perceived injustice."

This is a sad situation.

S..apple;

No I am not. I am referring to the reaction to every little statement or policy that the Conservative government makes.

The loophole in a law that was exposed a couple of months ago is an example.
