Statement By Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Death of Pope Shenouda III

MONTREAL- Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the death of the head of the Coptic Orthodox Church, Pope Shenouda III:

"It is with great sadness that we hear of the passing of Pope Shenouda III. The leader of Egypt's Christian minority since 1971, Pope Shenouda III was a source of strength and stability for Egypt's Christians, and indeed for Egypt as a whole. A man and a preacher of nonviolence, Pope Shenouda III saw reconciliation when there was division, and peace in times of tension. His wisdom and experience will be greatly missed in these new and promising days for Egypt's people.

On behalf of the Liberal Party of Canada and our Parliamentary Caucus, I send my deepest condolences to Coptic Christians in Canada and abroad."
