LOCKDOWN AT JOYCEVILLE INSTITUTION FOLLOWING MAJOR DISTURBANCE

Kingston, Ontario, December 9, 2012 –

At approximately 8:00 a.m., on December 9, 2012, inmates at Joyceville Institution initiated a peaceful protest on one range. Despite negotiations, the protest escalated into a major disturbance a few hours later when the 25 inmates began to barricade their doors, cover their windows and refuse to return to their cells.  The disturbance continued into the afternoon, with some damage to government property.  At approximately 5:15 p.m., all 25 inmates involved in the disturbance returned to their cells.  There were no injuries to staff or to inmates.  The institution is currently locked down.

The safety and security of our institutions is the primary consideration of the Correctional Service of

Canada (CSC). The institution will re open as soon as it is determined safe to do so.

All visits are cancelled until further notice.  Those who have previously scheduled visits are asked to contact the institution directly. In order to improve its practices to prevent and reduce future incidents, the CSC will continue to work in an effort to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and take action where necessary.
