Blaming the wrong person!
Michele Mandel's column today blames the Justice of the Peace who sat on Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah's bail hearing for a brutal murder apparently committed by Owusu-Ansah. She suggests that no one charged with assault and threatening should get bail.
I'm sorry -- a lot of innocent people, especially during a bad divorce, get charged. Remember people charged are not necessarily guilty and people make false allegations.
Should everyone accused of a crime have to spend months or years in jail waiting to be acquitted? No, that's why we have bail.
What's more we don't know what the Justice of the Peace was or wasn't told at Owusu-Ansah's bail hearing or even if the Crown asked for Owusu-Ansah to be kept in jail -- and publication bans on bail hearing come from the Criminal Code and not the Justice of the Peace (speak to Stephen Harper about that!).
I'm a defence lawyer who works with Justices of the Peace and so may be biased, but the person to blame isn't the Justice of the Peace. If anyone deserves blame it's Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah if and when he is found guilty of this dreadful and beastly crime.
