Marijuana possession still widely prosecuted in Canada
In 2011 Canadian police recorded 61,406 criminal incidents in which possession of marijuana was the most serious offence. 28,183 possession charges were laid. This does not reflect all charges for possession as it does not include situations where more serious offences took place and marijuana charges were also laid -- say an aggravated assault where marijuana was found on the accused and charges for aggravated assault and possession were laid.
