No surprise on the first two points. Whether or not you or I support those issues, I would expect him, or any other pope, to oppose same-sex marriage and abortion. Those are two really big theological issues for the church. A progressive member of the church would support the use of contraception to prevent abortions and the associated social problems/costs associated with such pregnancies. Change take time. Change in a 2,000 year old institution takes more time.
Before tackling the really big issues you mentioned, perhaps we can hope for a more open church that embraces a greater role for women and takes a step or two away from its traditional paternalism.
The problem with most non-Catholics and even many Catholics commenting on things like birth control and abortion is they do not understand the underlying doctrine. At the core of the Church's problem with modern forms of birth control is that they are, for the most part, abortifacients. The Church believes life begins at conception. The pill, IUDs, and such "prevent" pregnancy by preventing a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. The problem then is that if life begins at conception and your birth control prevents that already conceived life from implanting you are aborting it.
You will find the Church uses alternate reasoning when discussing barrier methods like condoms and sponges.
You cannot simply lump birth control into one big group and say the Church should change. If you take the time you will find that the Catholic Church's positions are exceptionally well thought out. You may disagree but then you simply cannot be a fully practicing Catholic.
You are much more likely to see progress on things like married priests than you are on core issues of faith like the sanctity of life and of marriage, but again, if you aren't a practicing Catholic why do you care?
Aren´t same-sex marriage, contraceptives and abortion social issues. Isn´t population the problem with the world? Apart from same-sex marriage...a personal choice, contraceptives and abortion control population but the RC Church is still of the mindset with the battle of the cradle. Why is it so important for the RC Church to be the number one religion in the world if it can be called that? It´s the same thing as billionaires now wanting to be trillionaires...it´s all about control and dictating.
