Statement by Liberal Party of Canada Leader Justin Trudeau on the situation in Israel and Gaza

OTTAWA – The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the situation in Israel and Gaza:

"The Liberal Party of Canada strongly condemns Hamas' rejection of the Egyptian ceasefire proposal and its rocket attacks on civilians.

"Israel should be commended for having accepted the ceasefire proposal, and demonstrating its commitment to peace. The Liberal Party of Canada, and many in the international community including the United States, the U.N. Security Council, and the Palestinian Authority, had urged a ceasefire that could have ended the tragic civilian loss of life in Gaza and the suffering of Israelis under terrorist attack.

"Israel has the right to defend itself and its people. Hamas is a terrorist organization and must cease its rocket attacks immediately."

Excellent. I may well remain in the LPC fold. We need moral clarity here in the face of Hamas' craven attempt to win their next election by either getting credit for dead Israelis or capitalizing on their own dead who they themselves put in harm's way. The rejection of a ceasefire makes this a total no brainer.

Its shameful that that there is no balance in these statements. Israel remains culpable for the death of many civilians - yet we consistently hear the refrain of self defense. I am all for the inherent right of all to protect themselves and their citizens. But to kill civilians on such a scale and not have it mentioned by Trudeau is tantamount to complicity. Shame, Trudeau could have been the next great statesman.

I stand with Independent Jewish Voices (Canada) calls on #NDP MPs to condemn Israel's massacres http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/ijv/2014/07/open-letter-to-ndp-its-time-to-condemn-israels-massacres …

Is there any difference between Liberals and Conservatives now? I'm ashamed of the Canadian Government. Gone the days of Lester Pearson

Independent Jewish Voices is a fringe anti-Zionist organization comprised of people with no connection to the Jewish community who use some notion of Jewishness (even though they reject the notion of there being a Jewish People or nation) to bolster their anti-Zionism. This is very simple--if there were no rockets Israel would not do anything in Gaza. No country can tolerate indiscriminate war crime rocket attacks on its civilians. That anyone would try to use notions of social justice and civil rights to enable one of the most intolerant far right movements on the planet to continue to attack innocents is beyond me. I am glad that there is now a tri-partisan consensus on this very basic moral question.

Its about time he followed Mr Harpers lead on this. There is nothing wrong with being on the same side as the Government on this subject, it shows some maturity.
