Blizzard conditions with gusty winds and visibility frequently near zero in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring.
Blizzard starting early this afternoon in Iqaluit and ending after midnight.
A low pressure system over the Labrador Sea will track northward and intensify during the day. This system will produce 2 to 4 cm of snow but the main feature with this system will be strong northwest winds developing with sustained winds increasing to 70 km/h with gusts up to 90 km/h possible late this afternoon and this evening. These strong winds combined with falling snow will reduce visibilities to 400m or less in snow and blowing snow beginning early this afternoon. Visibilities will improve overnight as winds gradually diminish.
Along with reduced visibilities, the strong winds will result in extreme wind chill values of -50. These wind chill values will remain near -50 into Saturday morning.
Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle. Avoid outdoor activities.
